Proa Night at NWMA

32 proa

32 Proa by Paul Bieker and Russell Brown.

The Northwest Multihull Association is hosting Proa Night this coming Tuesday, January 8!

With the new water speed record established by the Vestas Sail Rocket, the new proa kits from Chesapeake Light Craft and a resurgence of interest in Russell Brown’s seminal Jzerro design, proas have become a bit more visible now.  We will present video of various proas doing their thing and hear from the eminent naval architect, Paul Bieker, who has long been interested in proas and who is currently noodling on a proa design with Russ Brown.

The NWMA meets at the Puget Sound Yacht Club, 2321 N Northlake Way, Seattle, WA 98103.

why always these narrow hulls with complicated leepod and cockpit attachments, if a hull with a simple trapezoid shaped main frame could be constructed much easier and give much more space without needing much more material? The mast could be set on the windward side, the cockpit integrated beneath with two sliding hatches, opening to leeward as protection against heavy weather. Besides this construction would give better protection against capsizing, because of the increasing length of righting momentum, when the ama rises.
