The New Age of Sail

Posted by on 03/03 at 06:45 PM
NewScientist.com news service: The coming of steam sent the world's great sailing fleets into decline. The internal combustion engine finally finished them off. So it would be a strange twist of fate if the age of sail was resurrected by what amounts to a child's toy. Newscientist.com

  • Go to: =61&cHash=0e40ed0ebc for talk of plans, not yet realized to use a 15 meter long pilot vessel for testing kites as large as 40 meter square.

On the other hand, http://www.kiteship.com shows the reality of 420 square meter kite in use.

The corporate aims of the two companies are similar, in eventually providing motive power for large vessels. See an 1998 KiteShip article http://www.dcss.org/speedsl/KiteTugs.html

It is also the coporate aim of Naish, see the cruising world http://www.cruisingworld.com/toc.jsp?ID=35990&typeID=421 Shoreline article by David Shaw in the March 2005 issue. To put the Naish effort in perspective, look at http://www.dcss.org/speedsl/ and see that is about where Dave Culp (of Kiteship) was back in 1987.

This quest for traction kites to power ships goes back a lot of years. http://www.dcss.org/speedsl/Trans_Sailcraft.html is but one scientific paper about this subject.

I have no corporate connection with Dave Culp, but I have been following his work quite closely. I hate to see folks clain to have reinvented the bias belted snow tire.

    Have a nice day

    John
