What is the equivalent of heaving to on a proa?
If you just want to halt in place for a bit, let the sheet out and “park” with ama to windward. If you want to ride out a storm, pick a bow and tie on a sea anchor, I’d say. Hard to choose which one is the exact equivalent, for me at least.
“Once, on the way to Bermuda from Florida, my buddy Mike & I sailed through a tropical depression. Actually, we hung on a sea anchor for 4 days of 40 knot head winds. We were pretty comfortable below, talking and sleeping, but had to take turns looking around outside because it took awhile to calm down after looking at the conditions. “
-Russell Brown on Proas
It sounds like a series drogue would be appropriate.
If I recall Russells sea anchor was formed out of a pair of jeans! (such is the stuff of legends)
The tire drogue described in Jim Brown’s boo “A Case for the Cruising Trimaran” would work fine
