Richard C. Newick designed CHEERS for Tom Follett to compete in the 1968 OSTAR. He made it from Plymouth, England to Newport, Rhode Island in 27 days, 13 minutes, finishing 3rd overall, beaten only by two monohulls, the 56’ Sir Thomas Lipton and the 50’ ketch Voortrekker.
The world famous proa is now in France, under the care of doctors Vincent and NĂ©lie Besin, who now own and have restored CHEERS with the financial help of the French goverment which has declared her a “monument historique”, one of less than 100 small craft and the only multihull. I found a short video of Cheers sailing. I have not seen it here on this forum before so i wanted to post it.

There is a signed edition of the Cheers poster on eBay if anyone is interested. It has been up for a couple of months. I tried talking the guy down to $75, which is what I would be willing to pay, but he was not having it.

What a great video! That first boat must have been the first and the last fully ballasted catamaran in the world.
I agree. Great video. Cheers, of course, is the highlight! Thanks for posting the link, Johannes.

That video was shot the day that Tom left Newport, to return CHEERS to St. Croix in 1968. Tom wasn’t very tall. In the video he’s standing on the bench that was directly below the cockpit tower. Notice that Tom isn’t really working the tiller.
The video of THREE CHEERS must have been shot after Mike McMullin sailed THREE CHEERS back to England. THREE CHEERS didn’t have a fully battened mizzen sail in the 72’ OSTAR race. I actually think, that the guy sailing her is Martin Mintercamp.

I know. It is signed, but it is still just a poster. Even at $75 I was not that comfortable.

I’ve got two of the postcards from Halsted, cherish them, will probably incorporate one in my next trailerable proa.
Point out the the seller that the poster is technically inaccurate, Cheers had two equal height masts.
