Hi all, I live in Bulgaria,
my home port is Tsarevo, on the black sea. there we have a 22 foot
monohull. “Baby Mana” is a tough old bird, we sailed her from England
to here…... But always wanted a cat, till I heard about proas.
So been into proas for 4 years now, and this year finally got down to building it.
Pacific proa, ocean cruiser…..
I’ve been designing this concept for years now, and finally got down to it.
my budget is 1000 euro, for the whole boat and rig. yes, probably will just go over that figure…..
but not much. so building it out of poplar ply, nice spruce and standard hardware shop epoxy.
all fastenings are stainless steel. and I’m doing my best to fill all voids and seal all wood.
The reason: marine materials are hundreds of percents more expensive, but not that much better!
the concept, a cheap boat that we can all afford to build.
why? because, I can’t afford marine ply, marine epoxy and silicone bronze…..
so, I just went a head with good quality standard materials, and will try to look after my boat
by repainting and giving it time out of the water to dry. and we can all see how long it lasts….......
So GOOD LUCK to us all….....
P.S. click on my utube link, and tell me if I’m crazy…....... all the best.

It look very nice! How much do you estimate it to weight (empty, with rig)?

well, I calculated my materials and came to 320 kg vaka, deck, masts and rig.
the displacement of the vaka is more then 600 kg at 40 cm draft, my estimated waterline.
so lucky my wife and me are only 120 kg….. leaving me approximately 200 kg for water food and gear.
anchors, chain, ropes and other gear, I plan lashing on top of the ama, as it has a lot of displacement…....
well thats the plan, will try to stick to it…..
    all the best.

What are you planning to do for steering?

cuica, in my youtube clip I talk about a schooner rig for balance…..
a balanced boat steers her self, that’s simple physics. harder done then said, but very possible!
just move the CE towards the CLR, if that don’t work then try moving the CLR towards the CE…...
for close quarter steering, down wind sailing and any other shitty conditions.  I will use a rudder, that you could clearly see in the clip if you paid more attention…........
  it was all there man.
