Proa “Free Radical” for sale in New Zealand.

Hi proa people, just thought you should know that my proa Free Radical is now for sale. This boat was featured in an article on Proafile several years ago. It is a 16 foot shunting proa with twin ogive rudders and a cambered Chinese lug rig. I would much rather this boat was sold to a fellow proa enthusiast than someone who has no idea what they are doing, which is why I am posting on this website.

A very unique sailing proa designed and built by myself. This is a shunting vessel which means it shunts instead of tacking, so the bow becomes the stern and vice versa when tacking upwind. The means the small ama (outrigger) always remains on the windward side.

This is a fast boat with speeds up to 14 knots possible and good windward ability. It has won races in several proa events around the north island.

The balanced lugsail and twin rudders make this boat very easy to sail with minimal physical effort required. The sail can be reefed in seconds in bad weather.

Unlike many other proas this boat is reliable, strong and safe and has sailed on several long trips out to islands out in the Hauraki Gulf, as well as a 30 mile return camping trip up the Hokianga harbour.
Built from cold moulded Gaboon plywood, glassed over. Strong light and minimal maintenance.

Easily rigged, launched and sailed by one person but has plenty of room for two. There is a huge storage compartment in the main hull for camping gear, food etc, and smaller compartments in the ama.

Comes on a custom built Reid trailer (currently no warrant or reg) in very good condition with no rust. Boat has recently been repainted and upgraded with Harken deck hardware.

$3000.00 NZD or near offer.

Or closer to me.  It would cost more for shipping than the $3K NZD to get it here.

I sure hope someone does buy this boat - it represents a clear step in the evolution of westernized proas.  James’ ideas and execution of Free Radical have influenced me greatly.  James Brett’s videos displayed a simplicity of operation unequalled by it’s predecessors (and known successors) with good performance to boot.

Free Radical also brings the fringe nature of proas into focus as well - it is a shame that the ruthless conformity of the sailing public makes James Brett’s “For Sale” posting even necessary.  This cool boat with trailer is selling for less than a clapped out Laser.

I sure hope it sells.
