I just came across this: http://waakaulua.com/proa.htm. The double sheeting of the junk sails indicates this is a shunting boat. But the blog only has two entries. Does anybody here know more?

It is a shunting boat. I sailed for a day with Kiko in Hawiai’i, and talked about boats with him all afternoon. He’s a very nice guy and an expert on paddle steering and native watercraft in general. At the time he was doing tourist daysails in a tacking double canoe with about a 100 ft^2 spritsail, but we talked a bit about the proa you found a picture of. I was planning to rig my proa in Texas as a schooner, and he warned me that it would still head up a lot, even under foresail alone, which he was right about.
If you’re in Hawai’i it’s well worth your while to track him down and see if you can get a ride.

Kevin,
Good to see you online. Any plans for your boat collection? Sailing adventures? I’ve been in lockdown other than daysailing as I’ve had two boys in the last three years. Leaving my wife with all 3 kids while I sail isn’t good for marriages, so I’ve been out for a while. I am thinking of continuing to slim down my fleet a bit more and either sell the H18 or part it out and keep what I want for the FrankenTamanu/Hobie. I’ve moved as well and my new house is in a HOA that doesn’t allow boat trailers to be left in the yard—what was I thinking? Like you I’m thinking smaller, but maybe going with a production boat that doesn’t need too much love. Maybe I should get a roller furling hooter like Rick White did on his Wave and really downsize!

Hi Dan
No boats in the driveway! Ahhh! The horror! 😊
I’m sailing a little sharpie canoe/trimaran right now. I like the convertible aspect of it, and the actual cartopability. The green proa is apart and stored in the garage, and Skip’s old boat is coming to live in my driveway so I can fiddle with it more easily. I’ve been sailing the kayak on the Brazos River, which is about five minutes from my house, and I’m sort of daydreaming of a week long stealth camping trip after school lets out.
Congrats on the reproduction! Get those kids sailing! 😊

Loving being a dad even if it cuts into sailing time… That said, they’ve all been sailing on the Hobie Wave as young as 3 months old!
My big “problem” is my three car garage is a bit too short for my franken hobie/tamanu. I’m either going to glue it into a big cat or cut it down to fit in the garage. The trouble is a cat that fits in a 8’ wide garage bay isn’t really stable. I’ve thought of going with an outrigger or folding tri to make it fit easily, but really my sailing comes in big chunks mostly—either on trips to FL, TX or WI rather than steady weekly outings. As such, I’m thinking of keeping a boat for solo or tandem adventures here, a boat down in Sanibel so I can fly there and still sail, and just use the Wave for the lake house. There aren’t really that many good spots to sail locally and conveniently in the western burbs of Chicago.
