Hi proa owners

Although I am still a newbie here, I was reading in proafile and other proa interested forums and websites for quite some time. A lot is there to read about theories, very intersting, I have learned a lot. But there is not a lot about existing boats. A list I found here: http://www.histoiredeshalfs.com/50 multis/Liste des multis.htm
And shure you all know http://www.wingo.com/proa/links.html
But what existing proas do we have? There are some under construction and some are built. It would be nice to have a register of our proas, a kind of marina. That could be just a picture and the technical data, it could also contain a kind of test and comments to the behavior. Is someone interested?

Cheers
Alexander

Good idea, I’m interested. The proa wiki
http://wikiproa.pbworks.com/w/page/14592450/FrontPage
Almost does it but having a common repository sounds nice.

cheers,
Skip

That’s a very good idea! I think this forum or proafile would be the best place for such a list. Eg. the admin opens a new main theme like ‘proa list’, where everybody can post informations about his boat. Or better here would installed a kind of database, where you can enter boat data into a form for better overview. What kind of data are required could defined here with an opinion poll.

I think this is a great idea!!

I would want to know about length, width, scantlings, building material and if possible some “usual” speeds at different wind-conditions, steering, what kind of angle towards the wind it can do.

Some kind of simple list that is easy to fill with the relevant data. If everyone answers the same questions in a simple form it would become much easier to understand than if everyone writes whatever they like.

Johannes.

I took a sailing magazine to look what technical data they show in their tests. Then I found two very nice papers from Terho Halme who built the proa “Ping Pong”. These two papers are for catamarans but maybe someone could adopt them for proas (I can not). Anyway, these papers give also an idea what technical data could be interesting to compare our boats.
http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/multihulls/how-dimension-sailing-catamaran-22274.html
http://www.multihull.de/technik/catdimension.pdf

I try to make a list, any comments what is missing or too much are welcome:

Vaka:
type of construction (round bilge, sharpie, V-bottom…)
length over all
length of waterline
beam
beam of waterline
draft
prismatic coefficient
displacement empty
displacement fully loaded
deck clearance

same for Ama

Rudders:
aerea
draft
shape
profile
distance from center of boat longitudinally
”                          laterally

same for daggerboard

Bridge:
beam between hull centers
distance of beams
hight above waterline

Rig:
kind of rig (slup, schooner, crabclaw, junk…)
number of sails
total sail area
mainsail area
foresail area
length of mast
height of center of effort
distance of CE from center of boat longitudinally
”                                laterally

These are technical data, numbers. Interesting is also what the boat is built of and how. That could be a short description. It also could include the following:

Outfitting:
engine size
watertank size
fueltank size
bunks number
heads yes/no
cockpit seats number
deckhouse yes/no

A further part could be a description how she sails and in what conditions.

And a picture

You can collect a lot of data, but sometimes the overview get lost. I would suggest a two step presentation. First main data and second detailed data. It’s dependent of what kind of presentation is possible. If there will only a collection of disordered threads generated, it makes IMO no sense. Let’s wait, what the admin says.

A directory of proas is a great idea. Off the top of my head I can see two ways to go about it here at Proafile. The first is to open a new Discussion in the forum where any member can post info about their boat(s), with one thread for each boat. I could put up posting guidelines with suggested info, but it would be up to members to follow the suggestions and I can’t add custom form fields to the forum - it’s more or less a closed system.

The other option is to create a new section of the site, separate from the forum with all custom fields for boat data that would probably take me about a month to complete and on second thought… it’s not an option! 😊

I would suggest starting with the forum and if it takes off then we see about a fancier solution.

Hi everyone,

I would like to put in a vote for the wiki. The gathering and presenting of information is exactly what a wiki is designed for. A page could be made for every boat with just the technical data, like you propose, and then another page with a link to each of the boats. On every boat page could then be included more links at the bottom, for example linking to building logs, proafile discussions, sailing reports etc. This could then be edited by anyone to keep it up to date, compared to the forum where only the original poster can make changes. This gives the best chance of keeping things updated.

I should add that the wiki linked to above is going to be discontinued sometime in the future, as a better hosting solution has been found. All the pages are slowly migrating across. The new wiki is less frustrating to edit, and has a backup system to ensure the information will never be lost.

The address is at http://proa.me/wiki/doku.php

Greetings,
Thomas

What happened with that idea? The link above is dead, and proa_file is silent. I like all the more or less realistic thoughts and renderings here, they are a big fundus of creativity and innovative spirit. But ... I am also being interest in real experiences with real boats. What can we do to open the proa marina NOW?

There must have been a temporary problem with the server. The wiki is back online now. I made an example page you can have a look at.

Hi all,
because nothing happen with any kind of overview about today sailing boats I opened a ‘Proa Directory’ about cruising proas by my own. It’s only a collection of all cruising proas I know, and any information about further boats and missing data are welcome.
I restrict it to cruising boats, which should have minimum accomodation, and I numbered 17 boats/types. With this restriction, and your help I hope to hold it up to date.

Thanks for doing that, Othmar. Looks like a good start. I’ll post a link to it in Resources.

Good work pulling all that stuff together.

I don’t understand why you didn’t use wikiproa? (http://proa.me/wiki/) This sort of work is much easier if multiple people can contribute easily.

The problem is, that most people will/can not use Wiki! Hence you will never get an overview. At last someone must do the work. Will you do it 😊 ?

Hi Alex, I used Java for this website. May therefore your iPad didn’t work?
