Big nod to Wade and posting here because he may see it.
I have built a version of Wade’s third hand that is essentially a belt with a third hand mounted on it. Works really well in the boat shed, will take lots of tension. The neat thing is that if you grab the line and pull it up in the ‘release’ direction it releases and you have hold of the line.

Tink,
Sorry, but I don’t get it…
You already have a cleat on the left of the picture. What do the 2 orange thingy things, bring to the operation?...

The orange things act as a fair lead, because this is a lot freer than a deck mounted cleat without them the cleat rotates the rope pops out. It even works with cleat 90 degrees to the direction of pull, i.e. the rope straight out of the cleat normal to the plywood base

Got it. Thanks Tink.
This is one of those really cool solutions to problems we all encounter. I don’t know how many times I’ve used my teeth as a third hand - well knowing I’m taking a chance to enrich my dentist or get sick in the process. It isn’t instantly obvious, but I’ll now put this on my list of things I need to build.
