Hello Everyone,
It always fascinates me to see what motivates people to build a boat and go cruising. What are their reasons? What is it that is calling out to them? Getting away from something? Yearning to reach something? Any personal thoughts from y’all?

Here’s a brief video addressing some of the feelings that keep my fire lit…

Looking forward to hearing about some of your inspirations.

Cheers and Aloha,

I like sailboat cruising because the pace is dictated by the wind, waves, tides and weather, and not as much by schedules, deadlines and obligations. I like going places - traveling - whether to someplace new, or someplace familiar, without the mundane constraints of roads or traffic. I like the idea that if I wanted to, I could just keep sailing, and not run out of ocean.

But the reality of my life currently is that I can only excuse myself from the usual business for short periods of time to go cruising. I’ve enjoyed my current sailboat (a Siren 17), but I’m getting tired of always rolling side to side in the chop and not being able to exceed 5 knots without lots of excitement. I looked for an inexpensive, small multihull suited for camp cruising to buy, but couldn’t find any that met my needs. So I decided to build a proa.

When I get to sailing LOL (the proa), I’m sure I’ll learn and experiment until the hull falls apart, then I expect I’ll think about ‘the next boat’. Hopefully by then, I’ll be able to make bigger holes in the business of life for cruising.
