Why would you want to do 30 knots plus in big confused waves during a squally moonless night
Because it is much more fun than doing 20 knots in big confused waves during a squally moonless night.
I did not rock-climb to get bored or comfy. Some people seek out the fear and adrenalin, and when I think of high speed sailing offshore, I imagine a lot of adrenalin pumping through my veins. It sort of comes with the whole “high speed sailing” - thing. If I where looking for safety and comfort I would buy a Westsail 32 and only sail in moderate winds with reefed down sails.
This thread started out with a link to among other things this:
In particular, Wiebel has been developed with an eye on Sailrocket. Thus, Wiebel combines the best of both windsurfing and sailing. The high speed, great manoeuverability. and planing behaviour of windsurfing is combined with the size, the teamsport and the seaworthiness of multihulls. This combination results in the fastest and most spectacular sailboats ever,
When i think of “fastest and most spectacular sailboats ever” I don’t think of a Westsail 32 doing 5 knots in a steady sunny breeze.
I try to keep the thread as close to the original intent as possible. This is why I write about foils and 40+ knots in hurricane force winds. It is a natural progress and reply to the intent of the thread.
I can’t imagine a better way then foils to actually sail at 60 knots ( we are getting there) around the world on the leading edge of a violent hurricane. I might not want to, but it is going to get done sometime by someone, and I believe it will involve hydrofoils.
Cheers,
Johannes

Essentially I want a simple, minimal fuss fast day sailing boat with more bang for my buck. I want to spend my summers sailing a quick to rig craft and maximise my time on the water. Over the long winters I want to refine and rebuild, improving some or other aspect of the craft. My initial passion for proas was speed sailing. Over the years I have realised this is a far more complex problem than I have the time or resources to undertake. I do however love trying to conceive some speed demon and dream.

Looking back to the wiebel video and the link below, it is quite amazing how quick a good model can look

I am thinking about hydrofoil proas and may post some ideas, I think models will be the limit of my building though. Is there a world speed record for RC sailboats? I am off to look.
Completely out of the blue to night my wife suggested I get a foiling moth, and without taking breath questioned why I needed my current three boats and when was the proa leaving the garage. Sadly my left arm can hardly lift a pint let alone ama, vaka, aka etc… The physio is going well so hoping for June launch for TP 03
