A New 6m Cat From Pjoa

15 December 2020     Editor    5 Comments.

Cat 600 is the latest design from Pjoa, and their first offering that is not an outrigger! Like all their boats, the 6m long double canoe employs their highly evolved crab claw sail. Designed for day sailing and camp cruising, the canoe is intended to be launched from the beach and through the surf. Brimming with carefully considered details, the plywood stitch and glue construction will appeal to home builders.

  • The yoke on top of the A-mast is a joke, will never work even in lightest winds. Better laminate it completely stiff. Also fix the neck of the lateen with two ropes from the bows, saves weight and improves sailing windward courses.

  • Hi Dieter,
I’m really interested to know how you came to such conclusions.
Design of a trapezoid mast frame is not obvious but possible and it’s been tested.
Our experience with Crab Claws sail, rigged under A frame mast, on a 8m long catamaran does not confirm at all the need to fix the tack with two lines.

  • Hi Janusz,
maybe I´m wrong, but I cannot imagine the trapezoid mast not leaning to windward. I´ve already tried the stiff a-mast and it is very stabile. Considering the lines of the bow it might be useful to pull the neck of the lateen to windward in backwind courses, which reduces the tendency of rolling. Regards Dieter

  • Hi Dieter, It is great to see someone targeting directly at issues which are the key to the PjoaCat600 concept.
Here you can see movie with one of experiments: https://youtu.be/IMD1JNSkCy4
I wanted maximum length of yoke, but knowing this can’t go too far. First reason, for which yoke has to be quite short is the one you have brightly shared. But it doesn’t have to be zero, fortuneately for the idea of balancing the boat.
You will be right to raise that the model shown on the movie has the tack of the sail fixed with more lines then just one. I was testing this option, only to find this being less effective then I was supposing it to be, before the test. Best regards, Janusz.
