Micromegas 5

Think for yourselves and let others enjoy the privilege to do so, too.
—Voltaire

Emmanuel and Maximilien Berque have unveiled their latest Micromegas: No. 5. Earlier incarnations of Micromegas have all been self designed and built, unballasted small craft for minimalist voyaging, and this one is no different.

M5 is current with the latest thinking on high speed multihulls: hulls are surfboard-like planing surfaces; The central pod provides a firm staying base for the rig, a place to mount the outboard, and a comfortable cockpit from which to helm; The rig features a square top main, roller furling jib and a screecher. Certainly a superbe bateau for their next adventure! Thanks to Proafile reader Creed O. for the submission!

A daring and heretical yarn when published in 1752, Voltaire’s ‘Micromegas’ is the original science fiction short story, and still one of the best.

  • It’s 10 years later now and I am just getting started
searching the web for how this design fared.  I would
think the lesson in this one will have to do with the
main beams, so tempting, with so much space to load
up the hulls for the Micromegas 3 tested flat beam
shapes, and find out larger sections would be more
secure or at least not be a worry while watching them
work.  These guys are tremendous, the best small/light
boat offshore experimenters in the world, this must be
a good concept for voyaging in their style.
