Gaia’s Dream For Sale

20 July 2020     Editor    12 Comments.

Gaia’s Dream, the 71’ Pacific cargo proa we have reported on before, is up for sale in New South Wales, Australia for AU $79,000 (about US $55,300). Or rather it was - it is now listed as sold! Apparently the proa myth that you get more boat for the money is actually true in this case. Originally, Yvette Ini Wijnen had designed the boat with a fore and aft canting mast that ran on a curved track, to allow the CE to shift forward during the shunt. However this nicely done explainer video shows the mast stepped in the usual stationary manner supported by stays and a windward strut. Fore and aft roller-furling jibs are in place to shift the CE.

Much thanks to Poly for the submission.

  • There are no plans for sale, there is a similar scale proa thats never been built here that i believe you could acquire some form of plans for, there are a few other sources of plans mainly racing proas at that size which wouldnt work as cruising boats. There are several large french proas and there may be plans available in french. You could just about design your own if you got input from groups online with experience. They are relatively simple boats and many of the smaller designs are scalable if you have some engineering background. You do need to build them long, 45 feet is the absolute minimum youd want for a passage making boat.

  • Why is there an “absolute minimum of 45’ for passage making boat”.  Seems to me that the sailor, his skill level and his definition of comfort level determines passage making more than a number representing length. For 5 years I sailed a 24 foot monohull about 6000 miles solo in two oceans and was called everything from an “idiot” to “crazy” to “having a death wish” but it was a magnificent time. Honestly only once did I consider getting in a basket and being winched up to a helicopter but there was no helicopter offering their services, so I just continued running off under storm jib making 7 knots good over the bottom and wedging myself in between the cabinetry on the sole in the main cabin with all of the cushions. It passed! On my cruise I met an Argentinian guy on the beach of an island in the eastern Pacific who was sailing across the Pacific in an open wooden dugout that he and some Indians in the jungle of Darien Panama made from a tree they felled. His water tanks were plastic gallon milk jugs with screw on lids and his “cabin” was a piece of canvas stretched and nailed over the bow area with copper nails and painted with enamel paint to waterproof it. I’m guessing the boat was 12 or 4 feet. I believe he had a compass but NO nav aids and no electrical. Just sun and stars and since he was sailing west he basically just followed the sun and picked stars at night.

  • Hi Mike,

regarding your question about design plans. My proa “Mareinoa” (lenght 12m, http://www.mareinoa.de) was designed by Othmar Karschulin and he did a really great job. I think he would be glad to provide you with plans. Othmar is also running the webside “multihull.de” where he can be contacted. Good luck with your project.

  • I dunno what happened to their sail-in PNG islands medic-aid plans, but the Big Red Yacht (formerly Gaia"s Dream) is now again offered for sale on their blog today for $89 000 ($AUD?) on a mooring at Shute Harbour Whitsundays, QLD. I believe they bought her in Pittwater, Sydney, NSW, in June this year for $79k and have overhauled and made additions on the hard in August at Scarborough, SE QLD.

    Love your work

    • Price "reduced" to AUD$340k. I mean, I know there is serious inflation afoot, but come on. The jet ski docking station and black/red tiger? wrap must be worth a mint. Thanks for the update, Nick!
