The B&B Mini Trimaran Racer

B&B Yacht Designs is continuing their development of a very neat little adventure trimaran. It has pretty much everything you’d want in a pocket tri, nothing you don’t, and all in excellent proportion.

“Features include a roller furling mainsail and headsail for easy reefing and a boom for superior sail control. The amas retract into the center crossbeams to reduce the overall beam for trailering without having to demount the amas. A stern cockpit with a large kayak style cockpit coaming can be used with a spray skirt. Steering is accomplished with foot pedal controls or a tiller. The boat can also be sailed from the center cockpit and there is optional space to install a Hobie mirage drive in the center cockpit. Ample storage for a full expedition load. The center cockpit is flanked by a pair of “wing decks” which are large enough for sleeping aboard with a bivy or cockpit tent. A leeboard is controlled with lines running to the aft cockpit. The hull incorporates an integral spray chine above the water line to increase cockpit comfort while maintaining a narrow waterline beam of 19 1/2 inches.”

It won’t be a simple kit (trimarans never are), but if anyone can do it, the lads at B&B can.

  • 290# on an 18’-6” LOA….that’s almost proaish.
I’m impressed but then B&B has always done good things
    EC anyone?

  • The design brief included the EC at the top of the list. It would also make a good horse for the R2AK or the Around Washington race.

  • If it has decent load carrying ability be an interesting take on dinghy cruising.

    • I was very excited about this tri, except for load carrying. It looks like 620 (disp) - 290 (weight) = 330 load carrying. It means that two fat old men could not take it out together. That's a deal killer for me. I have too many one person boats already. If you look at Ridgerunner's video where he's sailing with a friend, they are very close to immersing the spray rail. This, but with 600lbs load, please! I have no other notes!

  • This boat looked interesting as I built and sail SpongeBob the basis for
this design. What killed it for me was the weight being more than double
mine with the same hulls. Add in the EC required gear and two people
and you will be very slow. I’m still waiting for one in the EC.
