Nearly ready for the R2AK trimaran

Sealark is a 19’ expedition trimaran built for the 2015 Race to Alaska, but did not make it to the start. The construction is multi-chine stitch-and-glue plywood/epoxy with fiberglass skins, and a custom carbon fiber mast and sails. Weight is approx. 400 lbs complete. Human power is by sliding seat rowing, or paddle.

The boat requires more development and work (like figuring out how to keep the amas firmly attached) but the project…

Conquered Sun

The 41’ Invictus is a nice example of a ‘70’s era multihull that was moored at Shilshole Marina in Seattle for many years. It was actively campaigned in local races, with the sugar scoop transom extension being a later mod for more speed. Sadly, it appears that Invictus has run into some hard times and is now being offered for scrap.

Even though the boat is old and apparently decrepit, it has nice bones with a fine hull, high wing…

Trailerable Brine Shrimp in California

Though it doesn’t say in the ad, this 23’ folding catamaran is a Thomas Firth Jones designed Brine Shrimp. Built in 2000, the boat appears a bit rough but the nice thing about plywood boats is that there isn’t anything that a little time and basic wood shop skills can’t fix. The sale includes trailer, sails and 4 hp outboard (that needs a tune up). Find it here on Craigslist in Vallejo, CA for $6000.

From the designer:

Newick Tremolino Hot Rod

The Richard Newick designed Tremolino is one of our favorite designs: employing the hulls, rig and connective tubing from a Hobie 16 to create a small cruising trimaran - genius! This one is said to be a fiberglass factory trimaran by Tremolino Co., but using the larger and more powerful Hobie 18 hulls and rig. This example includes synthetic shrouds, asymmetric, bowsprit, outboard and trailer, and comes in the best color possible for…

1980 sailing rocket w/ trailer

Seeing a Stiletto catamaran in 2014 always causes a “what the hell happened?” moment. The Stiletto was launched in 1975, the first (and possibly the last) production boat moulded in an autoclave of prepreg epoxy fiberglass/kevlar over a Nomex honeycomb core. This was aerospace tech for the middle class, and the multihull future looked bright indeed back in the 70’s. The styling was pure aerospace as well, and the boat stoked my teenage…

Navy wingsail tri up for auction

As part of a government liquidation, the U.S. Department of Defense is auctioning off a 50-foot sailboat to the highest bidder.

But this vessel isn’t what you’d expect from a former Navy craft. The three-hulled, high-performance Contour 50 boat, which is now in Harbor Island, was used for “experimental training and recreational purposes,” according to Liquidity Services, Inc.

Built in the mid 2000s, the craft has undergone some…

Wharram Tiki 26 on Orcas Island

The Wharram Tiki 26 is a true micro-multihull cruiser. It features the now classic Wharram attributes of plywood/epoxy construction, deep V hull, no keels or boards, lashed beams, open and high bridge deck, and the Wharram “wing sail” sloop rig. The design is probably the most popular of all Wharram’s boats, and several examples have crossed oceans in safety. Find this one here on Craigslist in Deer Harbor, WA, for $6000. If the boat…

1955 Time Machine - Woody Brown Catamaran

This is an interesting time capsule - a 1955 Manu Kai class 20’ catamaran, designed and built by the legendary Woody Brown. According to the seller, the original owner has passed away. He special ordered the boat direct from Honolulu and it was made specially for him. The catamaran has been stored inside and has not been used for years. From the included paperwork:

An original podcat

The 32’ Podcat was designed and built by D. Kirk Fuller in the late 1980’s. The iconoclast cat was featured in the March/April 1988 edition of Multihulls Magazine in a story written by Jim Brown. Apparently Jim and I were among the few who liked the design, because few, if any, were ever sold. Innovative in its day, the Podcat featured all composite construction with fiberglass truss beams and a carbon fiber free-standing mast. To…
