Newick Tremolino Hot Rod

The Richard Newick designed Tremolino is one of our favorite designs: employing the hulls, rig and connective tubing from a Hobie 16 to create a small cruising trimaran - genius! This one is said to be a fiberglass factory trimaran by Tremolino Co., but using the larger and more powerful Hobie 18 hulls and rig. This example includes synthetic shrouds, asymmetric, bowsprit, outboard and trailer, and comes in the best color possible for…

Navy wingsail tri up for auction

As part of a government liquidation, the U.S. Department of Defense is auctioning off a 50-foot sailboat to the highest bidder.

But this vessel isn’t what you’d expect from a former Navy craft. The three-hulled, high-performance Contour 50 boat, which is now in Harbor Island, was used for “experimental training and recreational purposes,” according to Liquidity Services, Inc.

Built in the mid 2000s, the craft has undergone some…

A-Cat based trimaran from Lunada Design

Long time Proa File contributor Chris Ostlind is working up a new ultra-light, hybrid human/wind powered tri based on an A-Class cat hull. Now that’s what we call recycling. Chris says:

I’ve been pretty much out of the design arena for a little over two years now, so I was excited when I was asked to develop a set of amas for a fast hybrid function boat being built by my friend and multihull guru, Mike Leneman. Mike’s boat is based on…

A Solid Gold Nugget

I saw mention of this Piver Nugget restoration at Small Trimarans.

Sailing into history; restored trimaran on bay again after 39 years

The 24-foot, multi-hulled sailboat Kaija was built by Kurt Larsen of Pleasure Point in 1964, stored for almost 40 years and given to Niels Kisling of Capitola two years ago.

Kisling, a historian for the Santa Cruz Yacht Club and board member of the Capitola Historical Museum, held court Sunday at a…

Self Righting Ocean Rowing Trimaran for the Tasman Sea

A new ocean rowing trimaran has been unveiled that will attempt a trans-Tasman crossing early next year - from Hokianga to Queensland, and back. Designed by New Zealand firm Lomocean, who also did the MS Turanor PlanetSolar, the boat is claimed to be the world’s first self-righting trimaran.

Their brief was to create something with speed in mind. A trimaran is quick, but presents one major problem.
“It’s quite likely he’ll be rolled in…

Can your trimaran do this?

“Dr. Frank” Smoot is the ultimate DIY sailor. He began his sailboat design career in 2009 with this and has progressed to this in only two years. His latest is the most ingenious small trimaran I’ve ever seen. If he continues at his Moore’s Law rate of improvement he should be building America’s Cuppers out of plywood/epoxy in about 6 months.

I want to make it clear right up front that I am definitely not a professional boat builder…

Angus Rowcruiser

Angus Rowboats have completed their latest project - a coastal cruising rowboat. 19’ stitch and glue ply, 175 lb. fully rigged, the boat features an enclosed bunk, a clever cockpit table and galley, and small floats that attach to the rowing outriggers to create a stable platform for lounging and cooking while at anchor.

To make a rowing boat that could have the comfort of a small cruising sailboat, yet offer the performance of a…
